In general, all applicants should have university level entrancequalifications, (such as A-levels or HS Diploma) or above, although we welcome applications from those with other life skills. We recommend you have completed at least the 1st 2 modules of your online course before you start your teaching practice component.

Please note that getting the right trainee mix is important for the success of the teaching practice week and to protect the interest of the group. All those who complete an application form (sent to you once payment for the online course has been made) for the practical component in Portugal you will receive a telephone call from the course provider to assess suitability for the course. This is also a good time to ask for further questions about the programme.

October 13th – 17th

November 3rd – 7th

The teaching practice takes place in a school in Leiria, a town of about 30,000 people in the mid-west of Portugal. Lisbon is the nearest airport and Leiria, which lies to the North, is approximately 90 minutes drive away.

It is a small, friendly school in the heart of Leiria town centre. It was established in 1987 and has established a very strong local reputation for both teaching and translation.

Teacher trainers are well-qualified experienced teachers and are on hand to support trainees throughout the week.

Now that I\'ve had some time to go through your comments and suggestions, I\'d just like to say a big thank you for all of your help and support over the past few months. I\'m delighted to have completed my course, and am looking forward to \"pastures new\" when I start teaching my first class next week.

I have to say that I\'ve been very pleased with the quality of service and level of support that I have received from everyone at Global English. The Teaching Practice Compenent
The key features of the training programme are as follows:

-Small training groups – a maximum of 3 trainees per group, ensuring trainees receive individual attention.

-Over 6 hours of observed teaching practice per training group. You team teach in your training group so you are fully supported in the planning and delivering of your lessons. This makes total individual teaching time between 2 hours, 30 minutes - 3 hours, 10 minutes and total “group” teaching time 6 hours. Trainees have access to all GT Teaching resource materials (including course books, cassettes, videos) and are given guidance in lesson preparation. This is the main component on which trainees are assessed.

-Detailed and extensive feedback on your teaching from qualified and experienced EFL professionals.

-Class observation – watch experienced teachers in action and gain access to a broader selection of students with differing levels of English and reasons for learning. This is a valuable part of the week and trainees have up to three and a half hours of observation time. Trainees create a Class Observation Report, where they can detail their experiences. Feedback sessions provide trainees with the opportunity to comment and ask questions.

-Learner profiling Trainees work with one of their students, in a one hour 1-1 teaching situation, reporting on areas of learner weakness and strategies to help them overcome these difficulties. A pro-forma is used for guidance and staff are available for support.

-Unknown Foreign Language – an excellent opportunity to swap roles and experience learning a new language from scratch. Trainees are given a 1 hour lesson in an unknown foreign language. This will give you an idea of the difficulties foreign learners face when tackling English for the first time.

This comprehensive programme provides valuable teaching practice in a controlled, supportive environment. Experienced teacher trainers are always on hand with help and advice, to help build confidence in the classroom.

Assessment
Assessment is ongoing and trainees will have a tutorial half way through the week and on the Friday. Tutorials serve to inform trainees of their progress, while allowing individual guidance.

Final grading and assessment is based on a combination of all of the above areas, weighted as follows:

Observed Teaching Practice 70%
Class Observation Report 10%
Unknown Foreign Language Report 10%
Learner Profile Report 10%

After completion of the practical course and assessment of the written components, successful trainees will receive a certificate.
