  :: TEFL plus Job option

A large number of people who undertake TEFL training hope (or need!) to find work very soon after finishing their course.

Most course providers will do everything that they can to help you source your first TEFL job. This can range from giving you an information and advice session on how to find work, to inviting large recruitment companies to come and tell you about jobs with their organisation, or even offering you a job within their school, or further a-field within their network of schools. Please see the ’Help for Jobs’ paragraph on each course page for further information on what your chosen school can offer you.

Although there is plenty of TEFL work to be gained via internet recruitment sites, or contacting employers directly, it is undeniably much more straightforward to opt to do a course that will give you access to paid employment afterwards. The good news is that there are plenty of these around, some which will give you access to summer work and others to longer-term employment.

No school will offer 100% guaranteed work to all trainees as it is unlikely that each and every one will be suitable for the posts available, or will pass the course sufficiently well. The following schools however have lots of opportunities for successful candidates and usually offer a 90% plus chance of getting you work.

Please bear in mind though, that you may need to be flexible about the specifics of where you teach, and also that job opportunities may vary according to the time of year- you are more likely to be offered work if you train during the main recruitment period. This tends generally to run from April- September, but does also depend on the specific country and the timing of their academic year. For more information on this, and other job-related issues for specific countries please see http://www.cactustefl.com/jobs/TEFL/country.php .

Schools which take on successful course trainees for (summer) work in the UK and Ireland are based in Bournemouth, Brighton, Bristol, Cambridge, Canterbury, Cheltenham, Dublin, Eastbourne, London Earls Court, London Russell Square, London Hammersmith, London Highgate, London Covent Garden, London South Molton Street, Newcastle and Norwich.

A school in the US which takes on successful TESOL course graduates is in New York.

Courses in Europe that offer especially good opportunities for securing work include Chania and Corinth, Alghero, Florence, Brno, Milan , Madrid Zurbano and Madrid Plaza Colon.

Courses in South America with good options for paid work afterwards include Buenos Aires, Mexico City, Guadalajara, Rio de Janeiro, Santiago, San Jose, Guayaquil and Cusco.

Courses in Asia where you are very likely to secure employment include Istanbul, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket, Pattaya, Phnom Penh and Suzhou.

Courses in Australasia include Perth, Sydney, Brisbane and Christchurch.

Along the same lines, but undeniably slightly different, is the option to do a 120 hour TEFL course (combining face to face and online training), and then take up a paid work placement after finishing. The provider of this 120 hour course has many contacts worldwide, and has paid placement schemes established in many different countries.

The placement service is offered free to anyone who successfully completes the 120 hour course.  Placements are available in the following destinations for a 6-12 month period.

China

Czech Republic

Japan

Slovakia

South Korea

Spain

Taiwan

Thailand

Indonesia

Please note that certain countries may require teachers to have a degree, and others may also require you to be over 21. Please see the 120 hour courses pages for information.
