Customer Feedback

"My experience of the CELTA course at Kamala was beyond anything I expected. The location is absolutely breathtaking to say the least. Being able to watch the sunset from your classroom is more than ideal. Also the weather was perfect while we were there. The food was delicious! . . ."

"I had the pleasure of doing my CELTA with them in August 0f 2011. Firstly, I highly recommend getting your CELTA here as everyone I've interviewed with has said that it is the best qualification you can have.
As a bonus, if you decide to stay in Ecuador, the school may help you find a job, like they did for me. . ."

"The people at the hostel and the hostel itself are beautiful and wonderful. They add so much character and fun to the experience. The tutors are phenomenal! I was really pleased with my learning experience. Everyone goes out of their way to make sure you have a fantastic experience. I highly recommend it . . ."

"Loved it! Could not think of a better place in the world to take the CELTA. The trainers were the most encouraging people one could ask for, and really brought out the best in us trainees because of this. Their passion for teaching English is contagious . . ."

"What to say about CELTA in paradise? If there's one thing that got me through five weeks of one of the toughest educational challenges I've ever faced, it was the ability to take a moment and clear my head on the beautiful, endless beach on my doorstep. Starting each day with a run and a surf meant that it was possible at Kamala, like nowhere else, to stay healthy enough to deal with all the challenges the course presents.
The food, as well as being delicious and nutritious, was a real bonus in terms of time. If I'd been working those hours and having to cook, I would have died of malnutrition halfway through the course! The course content was spot-on and delivered perfectly by two wonderful trainers. It was great to have two people with very different approaches on some things, but so united in others, to get two different perspectives on teaching. I felt I came away with a good understanding of the basics, now just ready to buff them up and put them into practice. I do feel I got value for money from this course. I feel in a really confident position to start work in terms of my developing teaching abilities and the knowledge and tools I have to seek employment and be competitive in the workplace . . ."

"Thank you for the excellent CELTA course at Playa Kamala. I could not have wished for a better CELTA experience. Everything was great - the organization was excellent, the trainers simply wonderful, and our Ecuadorian students very friendly and cooperative. We could concentrate on the course and did not have to spend time on anything else. Everything we needed was very close, the food was always ready on time, the cabanas were cleaned, and instead of polluted and busy cities we were on the Pacific Ocean beach! Despite the fact that the course was really intensive, I did not feel much stressed. I loved it. At the end of the second week I was even thinking about how to find anything else like this for my next summer! Although we were very busy almost all the time and the waves in the ocean were huge, I went swimming almost everyday! . . ."

Course Description

The course has been specifically designed as a CELTA "Plus". The certificate is the Cambridge CELTA, but the course has been upgraded to provide 50 more hours of support, an extra week, and an extra hour of teaching practice, to enhance achievement of your developmental goals.

The daily content of the course includes two-and-half hours of seminar or workshop session, two-and-a-half hours of lesson feedback and assisted planning, and two hours of teaching practice, Monday through Friday.

Features of the course that are distinct from the standard include an extra seventh hour of teaching practice per trainee, an embedded 25-hour language awareness workshop that shows you how to analyze language for teaching purposes and how to present grammar and vocabulary effectively in the classroom.

Assessment is continuous, and based on teaching practice and the written assignments, as is standard for all CELTA courses. Our grading scheme is unique and designed to provide the maximum amount of useful information to foster your development.

Teaching practice is conducted at two levels, one below intermediate level, and one above. You teach each level for two-and-a-half weeks. All courses have just two "phases", just one change, to enhance quality. Practice students come from the local communities and the groups are quite diverse: we have students from all walks of life from university professors to local government officials to surf instructors to taxi drivers. The average age of students is about 30, and the range is generally from early twenties to early fifties.

Candidate qualification is determined through the application process. There is no requirement for a university degree. The school accepts applications from all other CELTA centers. The time from application to acceptance can be as little as three days for candidates who wish to expedite their applications.

Accommodation Options

The course is a residential course. All trainees stay in private individual cabanas in our ecoresort facility on a pristine South Pacific beach. The cabanas have private en suite baths with hot running water and flush toilets. Cabanas are solidly constructed of recovered wood, bamboo, and thatch and feature large decks with hammocks and a view of the sea. The cabanas have electricity, a work desk, full size bed, and basic furnishings. Wifi internet access is free of charge. There are larger double cabanas available for couples or small families.

Home-cooked meals are provided three times a day, seven days a week, vegetarian and other special dietary options are accommodated. Meals are served buffet style in the open air restaurant bar of the resort. Lunch is a minimum of one-and-a-half hours to provide adequate "down-time" for rest.

School Details - Santa Elena Coast

The center is hosted in an ecoresort on a protected wide sand beach between two small towns in Santa Elena province. One can walk to either of the towns on the beach in less than a half-hour or access them by taxi. The towns are quaint but have all facilities for travelers.

The resort is about two-and-a-half hours from Guayaquil, a booming tropical metropolis that is the largest city in Ecuador, and less than an hour from Libertad, a large town in the same province. Both are easily accessible by bus or taxi.
The school provides free transportation in our van from the central business district of Guayaquil on the Sunday morning before the first day of the course.

Help for Jobs

The school has an active job placement service within Ecuador whereby the director of the school has relationships with employers that exclusively or preferentially hire graduates of the course.
The placement rate is very high. In addition, for those who wish to go elsewhere in the world for work, the course has two seminar sessions dedicated to how and where to find jobs and how to interview effectively.
