Customer Feedback

The CELTA course gave me an opportunity to develop and improve my teaching skills. I have learnt a lot of useful techniques which I definitely will apply in my practice as a teacher. I strongly recommend this course even to very experienced teachers.
-Dominika Szafranska-Lichwala-

The course really came up to my expectations. The tutors were well prepared and very helpful. I would recommend this Training Centre to everybody willing to do CELTA. The staff turned out to be professional and capable of assisting me whenever I needed any help.
-Peter-

A good course. It gives people who are new to the teaching profession the basic input and first practice in teaching English. To experienced teachers, especially those who feel tired or stuck in a rut, it offers a fresh look at and new enthusiasm for teaching. A very positive, refreshing experience.
-A. Gnoinska-Szeliga-

The course was very intensive but well worth the time and effort I put in it. Both the input sessions and teaching practice slots, followed by peer and tutor feedback, gave me a lot of insight into how young learners learn and what we as teachers can do to ensure optimal conditions for them to benefit from English lessons. I recommend it to all teachers with no or very little experience in teaching young learners.

Course Description

The YL extension to CELTA is intended for those with little or no previous experience of teaching young learners but have been awarded the CELTA.

Admission requirements: The course is open to both native speakers of English and those whose first language is not English. In either case a high level of proficiency in written and spoken English is required. Candidates are usually university graduates. Participants must be at least 20 years old by the date of the start of the course and have the potential to develop the necessary skills to become effective teachers of young learners and to complete successfully the written assignments and the assessment of practice teaching. Applicants for the YL Extension to CELTA must be holders of CELTA certificates.

Course Content: The course comprises approximately 50 hours of "input" (demonstration and discussion of teaching techniques plus language awareness activities); daily teaching practice; 6 hours observation of experienced teachers, 2 written assignments.

The course programme is designed to enable candidates to:
- transfer and apply their awareness of language and knowledge of the description of English from an adult to a young learner context.
- gain an initial understanding of the context within which young learners learn English, their motivations and the roles of the teacher and learner.
- transfer, adapt and apply the principles of effective teaching from an adult to a young learner context.
- transfer, adapt and apply basic skills for teaching English in the classroom from an adult to a young learner context.
- gain an initial awareness of appropriate resources and materials for use with young learners of English for teaching, testing and for reference.
- continue to identify opportunities for their future development as professionals in this field.

Assessment: Teaching practice is assessed by the course tutors through continuous assessment. There are also two written assignments, with a practical orientation. Participants are required to keep a portfolio of their work throughout the course. Successful candidates will receive one grade: Pass.

School Details - Katowice

The school is well-established, with a main school in Katowice and a branch in Opole. Dedicated to quality in all areas of operations, it has recently become an authorised Cambridge ESOL Exam Centre. It's long history and strong reputation means it is well-recognised in the local market. As well as being an affiliate of IHWO, the school has been granted two other quality accreditations: PASE (Polish Association for Quality in Language Education - www.pase.pl) and 'Kuratorium' (the Polish state institution for education). Rather than specialising in a particular area of English teaching, the school offers a wide variety of courses.

The school is located close to the city centre, and can offer comfortable classrooms, a teachers' room, a well-stocked resource area and all the expected facilities, including interactive whiteboards, WiFi and computer access available. There is also a comfortable lobby with a fire place, tea/cold drinks bufet and a library. A small patio garden is available in spring and summer.
