- Do you want your career to take a new turn?
- Can you only attend training courses in the summer?

Status & Recognition

The Cambridge DELTA Diploma has been accredited by the Qualification & Curriculum Authority as a Level 7 Qualification

DELTA holders who later wish to follow a post-graduate course in a related field are given exemptions from a wide number of academic institutions in the UK. For a list of British Universities offering exemptions, please follow the link below:

http://www.cambridgeesol.org/exams/teaching-awards/delta-exemptions.html

The Cambridge DELTA Diploma is widely recognised and valued by the profession and it is the first step to a career in TEFL which may have the classroom as its main focus but which may also take the holder into a number of other interesting directions, such as

- materials writing
- academic management
- teacher training
- editing EFL materials
- promoting EFL materials

The DELTA Diploma could be the start of a much more rewarding and satisfying career in TEFL/TESOL

The course is organised around three modules, each of which is assessed separately. During the last module (Module III) candidates may focus on an area of specialisms such as:

• Business English
• Teaching young learners/young adults (specified age group required with 5-year range e.g. 8–13, 14–15)
• English for Special Purposes
• English for Academic Purposes
• ESOL learners with clear specialist needs e.g. literacy needs
• CLIL/Embedded ESOL (teaching English through subject/work-based learning)
• Teaching examination classes
• Teaching one-to-one
• Teaching monolingual classes
• Teaching multilingual classes
• Teaching in an English-speaking environment
• Teaching in a non-English-speaking environment

This change means that the new DELTA scheme can be much more relevant to the different needs of different teachers. It is no longer dedicated to the teaching of adults, but covers other needs and age groups of interest to each candidate as well.

Candidates on the same course may even select a different specialism each and work on an assignment which may be of real value to their particular teaching context.

Course Organisation

The course offered by our centre is an integrated course and covers all three modules within attendance dates. Each candidate must undertake an independent programme of preparation study prior to the course. After the end of the course, candidates may continue contact with their tutor for the completion of the write up of their Module III assignment work, but this is not face-to-face and can be done online and via email.

Module I - this module is assessed through written examination. Written examinations are usually taken at CELT but in the case of candidates from other countries, they will either have to return to Athens or find a centre in their country which can administer the written exam - any centre offering CELTA will usually be already eligible.

Module II - this is the practical module with background assignments and Teaching Practices which have to be written and taught/assessed during the course. This module is assessed externally by a Cambridge appointed external assessor who visits CELT Athens and observes all the candidates during their final Teaching Practice. The coursework of each candidate is sent to Cambridge for review and the final grade is decided during the Awards meeting for each session.

Module III - introduced during the course through input or individual tutorial. The write up phase takes place after the end of the course in the Full Time Course, but during the course in Part time Courses. During this stage the centre supports candidates either online or face to face, depending on which area of specialization they have selected and availability of tutors with expertise in the particular field. Assessment is done through an extended written assignment which is submitted to Cambridge for marking and forms a separate part of the assessment.

Individual candidates who wish to postpone their assessment for any one of the three Modules, are responsible themselves for paying assessor flights and fees or for finding an authorised centre to take their written examinations.

Course Options

The school is offering:

1. An 8-week intensive course offered in the summer (June to August), fall (October & November) and winter (February & March).
2. A 30-week ( 8-month) course which prepares candidates for the written examination in June or December. Sessions are held twice a week on weekdays, (10:00 - 13:00).
3. A 10 intensive weekends option. DELTA students come to Athens once a month (10:00 -17:00 on Saturdays & Sundays). Weekend courses start in October and January.

DELTA course application procedure

Applicants must have experience of classroom teaching experience at a variety of levels. Please note that the DELTA is no longer a qualification for teaching adult classes. Your experience may have been with:

• young and very young learners
• teenagers
• young adults
• adults
• business/professional English groups
• academic English groups.

Applicants must already hold a first degree in English or have appropriate qualifications which allow them to teach in their country; in addition, they should have attended a teacher training programme such as a CELTA, COTE or a Certificate in TEFL.

It is entirely at each centre's discretion to examine and accept each candidate on an individual basis according to their background, experience, training and potential.

Selection is made on the basis of:

1. Classroom teaching experience as described above
2. Educational background & evidence of TEFL training
3. A Language and Methodology pre-course examination
4. A personal interview with the Course Tutor (by phone, Skype, MSN, or other messenger service).

The DELTA course is supported and supplemented at the school by a specially dedicated course support website which includes:

• selected keynote articles on each topic of the timetable
• assignment guidelines and examples of assignments submitted by past candidates
• lists of resources and links for revision work
• written examination practice materials for the written examination
• a bookshelf with a wide selection of electronic versions of library titles

The support website is password protected and exclusively used only by registered candidates.
