Customer Feedback

The trainers were extremely supportive throughout the course and their feedback was generally very productive. I would be happy to recommend the school to anyone I know who is interested in studying for a CELTA in Seville.

The CELTA was exhausting but worth it! I was impressed by just how much I absorbed in only four weeks, and slightly terrified by the fact that after those four weeks I was officially allowed to be let loose on the public! The IHCYL was again very tiring but a big learning curve for me. Both courses have set me up for the big wide world of teaching English and have given me an enthusiasm I didn t know I had for the job.

The service provided by Cactus TEFL was everything I could have ever needed to do with my course and more. As a result, I have already recommended several people, both friends and strangers, to go through Cactus when considering their TEFL courses.

Course Description

About the CELTA
The CELTA - Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults course (previously known as the CTEFLA) provides initial training leading to a Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults. It is intended for those without previous experience who wish to enter the profession and for teachers with no previous training in this field. Success in the Certificate has enabled many candidates to obtain their first teaching position: the course is highly regarded by employers as providing sound initial training and a strong basis from which to develop as a teacher of English.

Why THIS Training Course?

- Internationally Recognised Certificate
- Moderated by the University of Cambridge
- Highly Qualified, Experienced Trainers
- Practical Approach to Methodology
- Extensive Supervised Teaching Practice

- Professional Development
- Classroom Observation
- Teaching Practice

Teaching Practice

Teaching practice is an integral part of the course. This is organised in small groups of 5-6 trainees with volunteer students at two or three different levels. After each teaching practice session an evaluation of the session is led by a course tutor. Trainees are expected to liaise within their groups outside course hours in order to plan teaching practice classes, according to guidelines provided by course tutors.

Assessment and Certificates

Trainees are continuously assessed in all the syllabus areas, including written assignment, and with particular emphasis on their teaching ability and potential. At the end of the course successful candidates receive the Cambridge Certificate and a Progress Report.

Entry Requirements

Candidates must be at least 20 years old at the start of the course. They must have a standard of education which would allow entrance to higher education in their country. They must have an awareness of language, and a competence in English, both written and spoken, that enables them to follow the course.

Course Design

Full-time over four weeks
The 128-hour full-time course is very intensive and requires a full-time commitment. Full attendance is very important. It is not possible or advisable to hold even a part-time job while on the course.

Enrolment Procedure

Applicants for the course must complete an application form and send it to us at Cactus. You will then normally be called for an interview, although if you are a long distance from Seville you may be interviewed by telephone. To secure a place once you have been accepted you should ensure that the full fee is paid at least six weeks before the course begins. Applicants applying less than six weeks before the course are required to pay the fees on acceptance.

Class Times

Sessions are held between 9.00am and 5.00pm including teaching practice. Note that the course is full-time: it is not possible to combine the course with regular teaching. Observation of experienced teachers (8 hours in total) takes place after course hours, as does individual lesson preparation.

Books

Recommended reading for the course includes:

GRAMMAR: PRACTICAL ENGLISH USAGE by Michael Swan (OUP) or LONGMAN ENGLISH GRAMMAR by Louis Alexander (Longman)
METHODOLOGY: - You are also advised to have access to a methodology book; either THE PRACTICE OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHING by Jeremy Harmer (Longman) or LEARNING TEACHING by Jim Scrivener (Heinemann).
TEACHING ENGLISH IN SPAIN: If you are considering staying in Spain to teach English, TEACHING ENGLISH IN SPAIN by Jenny Johnson (In Print Publishing) gives you thorough background information on this aspect.

Accommodation Options

Cactus TEFL can arrange your accommodation on your behalf. You will share an apartment with others on the same course as you. We have found it helps enormously to swap ideas and help each other through the tougher parts of the course.

The apartments are basic with the use of kitchen and bathroom facilities, and single room accommodation.

Cost for this in 2008 is 440 Euro for the full four weeks. In 2009, the price will be 520 Euros. An additional £40 accommodation booking fee applies.

Subject to availability, extra nights' accommodation can be arranged at 27 Euros per night on a self-catering basis.

School Details - Vejer de la Frontera

The school occupies a 19th Century building which has been built upon the ancient Moorish town walls. Great care has been taken to preserve the 11th Century walls and watchtower which can been seen from the school's well-kept garden. There are also two interior patios and a roof terrace with 360 degree panoramic views, perfect for taking a well-needed break from your CELTA course.

The Vejer centre is part of an international organisation of schools that have a large presence in Andalucia and the rest of Spain. The CELTA course is run by experienced trainers from the Seville centre, and as you would expect, the quality and delivery of the training is of the highest standard.

Vejer de la Frontera
Vejer de la Frontera is possibly one of the most beautiful towns in Andalucia. Built on top of top of a hill, this traditional Moorish town overlooks the Straits of Gibraltar and the rolling Andalucian countryside. You can actually see the coast of North Africa as well as the nature reserves that surround the town. Winding cobbled streets, white-washed houses and friendly locals are just some of the attractions of Vejer. The town was declared a national monument in 1978 and is located just 8km from the nearest beach on the Costa de la Luz.

Timetable
