One of the hardest courses to find in the UK is a Younger Learners Extension course, which you take after the CELTA or CertTESOL, or with suitable teaching experience, in order to prepare you for the specific area of teaching English to Younger Learners.

As your basic course focuses only on teaching adults (with maybe an hour dedicated to looking at other age groups), newly qualified teachers can find themselves at a loss to know what to do, what to prepare and how to cope with a class of 4-6 years, toddlers or teenagers!

In competitive and developed markets like Spain, for example, this qualification is highly valued by employers who may wish to give you up to half of your timetable in Younger Learner classes. Prove that you can do it, and that you have the qualification, and doors will open.


Courses available: SKOLA - London Skola has been in the business of teaching younger learners for many years. It works on similar grounds to a private school in the UK, but accepts children of all ages on short-term English language courses. This places the school in a position to offer Younger Learner courses, as they are able to find groups of children for observation of qualified teachers in action. Note: Usually you will already hold the Cambridge CELTA or Trinity CertTESOL, or have suitable experience, before you can take the YL course.
