'Memorial fund launches languages scholarship scheme'
June 13, 2007

Students struggling to afford to study language courses could get funding help following the launch of an annual scholarship scheme.

The Suzanne Furstner Foundation scholarship, announced by Cactus Tefl, an advice shop for language courses, will cover the cost of a four-week Cambridge Celta (certificate in English language teaching to adults) course followed by a two-week Spanish course at one of Cactus' participating schools in Spain.

To be eligible, participants must submit an assignment of no more than 1,500 words on the topic Six weeks in Spain. The theme can be interpreted any way, but must make reference to English language teaching in some form.

The scholarship will be launched tonight at the Cactus Tefl open evening at the Guardian's Newsroom.

The deadline for entries is October 15 and the judges will announce the winner in November.

Suzanne Furstner was the head of Cactus Tefl before she was killed in a road accident in Spain in May last year. The foundation was set up in her memory to support language and education training across the world.

In addition to the scholarship, the foundation helps fund school study trips, provides course books and DVDs and arranges free courses for charities or organisations that work overseas.
