School Details - Brighton Portland Road
The school is a year-round English language school with a student population of between 60 and 150 students, depending on the time of year. It is situated in a quiet residential area of the lively, cosmopolitan city of Brighton and Hove. It is within easy reach of Hove station and there are frequent buses to the centre of Brighton. The school is conveniently located for all facilities and can arrange local accommodation for trainees from outside the Brighton area.
The school has been a centre for CELTA courses since 1989 and has established an excellent reputation for teacher training. We are known for our hardworking but informal, friendly atmosphere, and over 60% of our trainees come through personal recommendation.
The school is part of a global network of over 500 schools in 15 countries. There is a permanent hiring office in London for positions in Japan.
If you want to work as an English Language teacher either in Britain or abroad, Cambridge ESOL CELTA (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults) is probably the most widely recognised ELT qualification in the world.
The four week, full-time course leading to this qualification is designed as an initial course for people with little or no experience of English Language Teaching. It is suitable for native speakers and advanced non-native speakers. The course is an extremely practical introduction to the theory and methodology of English Language Teaching.
- Be at least 20 years old at the start of the course (unless by prior arrangement)
- Have a university degree, or at least standard of education which would allow entry to higher education: a minimum of 2 A-Levels or equivalent.
- Have an awareness of language and a competence in English, both written and spoken, that enables them to follow the course.
- Previous teaching experience is not required.
Details of the course
Course duration 4 weeks
Contact hours 120
Supervised teaching practice 6 hours per trainee
Maximum class size 12
The training day runs from nine to five, and the homework and lesson preparation tasks make this a very intensive course. CELTA centres around teaching practice (TP). In this centre they are fortunate in that they can devote the whole morning to TP. A typical morning will consist of assisted lesson preparation followed by two hours of TP with peer observation and feedback. During the course you will teach multilingual groups of real students at two different levels.
In the afternoon, you will have two practical input seminars in which the tutors will reinforce effective teaching techniques and provide you with a wide range of teaching ideas and materials. As well as basic teaching skills, the syllabus also covers lesson planning and teaching methodology, language analysis and awareness, planning and resources for different teaching contexts and developing professionalism and self-evaluation skills in the field of ESOL/ELT.
You will also observe 6 hours of experienced teachers working here in our school. During the course you will have to complete 4 short assignments (a total of 3000 words), which serve as a practical reflection of the syllabus.
There is continuous and integrated assessment throughout the course which covers all aspects of the course and is validated by an external assessor. Candidates who fulfil the necessary criteria are awarded the Cambridge/ESOL Certificate. Results are issued within one week of the end of the course. The school also gives each candidate a detailed report with an assessment of their individual progress and potential.
The school can arrange airport transfers from Gatwick, Heathrow or Stanstead to your accommodation:
One-way to Gatwick GBP 67
One-way to Heathrow GBP 112
One way to Stanstead GBP 132
The school can arrange host family or guest house accommodation for the duration of the course. Host family accommodation with half-board costs £160 per week in 2017. Guest house bed and breakfast costs approximately £60 per night. There is also a self-catering homestay option at a cost of £120 per week, with a host family. There is a £25 per week supplement between 18/06/17 and 27/08/17.
It was really helpful, well organised and I enjoyed it. Great trainers, friendly and helpful staff.
- Sandra Kocher - February, 2011
The trainers were excellent and the course was very useful and informative, intensive though!
'Intensive' is definitely the word! However, it was good to get straight into teaching practice and all the input sessions were useful. The workload from the written assignments was well-timed over the duration of the course. I am amazed at how much we have learnt in just four weeks!
Help for Jobs
Career guidance is given as part of the syllabus and we are regularly notified of overseas teaching posts available to newly qualified teachers. The school also often employs ex-trainees, particularly in the busy summer months.
