School Details - Perth

This school is the longest established private institution which teaches English to speakers of other languages. In 1987 the college was approved as a recognized centre by the Royal Society of Arts to conduct its Certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL). It was the first institution in Western Australia to be accorded this honour, and the second in Australia. In 1988, the University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate took over administration of the course. The Certificate is now known as the University of Cambridge Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CELTA).

With a population of 1.6 million, Perth is the state capital of Western Australia, Australia's biggest and richest state. Located on the Indian Ocean coast, along the Swan River, the city is an outdoor sports paradise. It also enjoys some 8 hours of sunshine a day year-round - no wonder it claims to be the country's sunniest state capital and, with temperatures averaging 25 degrees in the summer, it's all the more appealing. The city centre bustles with activity. The sunshine city may live in relative isolation from the rest of Australia (Sydney is some 4400kms away by road) but there's certainly plenty here to keep you happy for a while.

Course Description

The aim of the course is to develop practical awareness of:

- LEARNERS: cultural and individual needs; approaches to help learners overcome their difficulties; and the motivation of adult learners
- LANGUAGE: linguistic form, function and meaning, including a knowledge of grammar and its terminology, and an appreciation of structure and function; an understanding of the principles of language and grading; an introduction to how subject matter and context affects language; and the importance of phonology
- MATERIALS: selection and evaluation of materials; course books with their accompanying teachers' books and workbooks; supplementary materials; authentic versus non-authentic materials; and reference works for both teachers and learners
- CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT AND LESSON PLANNING: the ability to arrange the physical environment appropriately for different learning situations and to establish an appropriate atmosphere for learning; the ability to plan both individual lessons and a series of lessons appropriate to student needs.

For example:

General Procedure - setting up group work
Possible Techniques - deciding on size and composition of groups; giving instructions on getting into groups; ensuring that all groups are working appropriately

- PRESENTATION AND PRACTICE OF NEW LANGUAGE: the ability to select language items appropriate to students' needs and level; to divide the items into learnable units; to present the language clearly and efficiently to students; to devise and operate appropriate activities for the controlled and free practice of the language presented; to check learning and understanding at all stages of the process

For example:
General Procedure - checking of learning and understanding
Possible Techniques - devising context checking questions; using questions to check understanding of forms, concepts and functions of language; devising non-verbal checks of understanding and learning; using simple tests of achievement

- DEVELOPING THE SKILLS OF READING, LISTENING, SPEAKING AND WRITING: the ability to develop the four skills using techniques which require not only their individual development but also their integration; to select appropriate materials and to have the ability to use a wide range of techniques to this end

For example:
General Procedure - improving global listening ability
Possible Techniques - deciding on the aims of a lesson within a series of lessons; selecting listening texts of the right length and level of difficulty; devising tasks or questions which check general understanding

We strongly recommend that you obtain a Working Holiday Visa before coming to Australia. This means that if you have even the vaguest intention of working, you will be covered to do so. These are relatively easy to obtain, and at the time of writing, we understand that these are valid for a year.

Help for Jobs

Job Placement
The school helps course graduates in the following ways:

(1) The University of Cambridge has a free job placement service for successful CELTA graduates. The application form which gives details of work worldwide is given to each graduate.

(2) Practical advice, tips and assistance are given to course participants on an on going basis during the course and in a job help session.

(3) The school is asked from time to time by Australian and overseas colleges to recruit teachers, and gives first preference to its CELTA graduates.

(4) On average, the school offers employment to 2 or 3 graduates from each course; more from the July and August courses.

(5) Worldwide, demand for CELTA trained teachers largely exceeds supply. The indications are that this buoyancy will continue.
