School Details - Budapest

The Budapest School is a highly successful and long-established centre for a range of ELT training qualifications. Having offered the Cambridge CELTA (in all its previous guises and formats) for 25 years, it has become something of a specialist within its field and has been home to many of the material and book writers who are now well-known in the TEFL industry.

Pass rates for Cambridge ELT qualifications are extremely high in Budapest. The team of dedicated full-time (CELTA and DELTA) teacher trainers offer training of the highest quality yet also believe in the value of making your CELTA experience one that is fun. And when you consider that they run courses every single month of the year, you can ensure that they are experienced at getting the right balance.

Centrally located on the Buda side of the city, and just a few steps down from the castle, the school can be found at the busiest transport hub. School facilities include an extensive teacher training library, a self-access room (with computers for the exclusive use of trainees) and a photocopier / printer; all resources / books / materials and copying are provided free of charge so there are no hidden costs.

There is also a large teachers' room, a snack bar, several sitting areas, not to mention 20 classrooms.

Course Description

The Online CELTA course is the exact same high-quality programme as the face-to-face course at our Teacher Training centres but delivered completely online.

You receive the same highly-regarded CELTA qualification
You complete the same course curriculum
You are taught by the same experienced, supportive team

CELTA is a course giving you a thorough grounding in all aspects of teaching the English language to adults. One of the most widely taken qualifications of its kind, thousands of people each year choose CELTA to open up a world of exciting English language teaching opportunities. Part of the University of Cambridge and validated by Cambridge English Language Assessment, the Cambridge CELTA course is recognised and accepted by teaching institutions worldwide.

Course Content
Teaching Practice The course is very practical in nature and teaching practice takes place using Zoom under the guidance of your tutor. Course time is set aside for the preparation of these lessons and your tutor will assist and guide you throughout your time with us. You will gain experience in teaching at two distinct levels.

Language Awareness This component is designed to familiarise trainees with aspects of the English language. It focuses on grammar and structure (form), meaning in context (function) and the sound system of the English language (phonology).

Written Assignments Candidates need to complete 4 written assignments which range from formal language analysis to a study of teaching materials. They are graded on a pass or fail basis and candidates must pass 3 out of 4 assignments.

Methodology of Language Teaching & Learning This involves the analysis and appreciation of various methods, styles and strategies for both language teaching and learning. You are also introduced to a range of teaching aids and classroom management techniques.

Live Online Observations During the course you will be timetabled for 6 hours of live online observation. This will give you the opportunity to see experienced teachers in action. These observations are complemented by specific observation tasks, which will be referred to throughout the course.

Applicants must:

- Be at least 18 (it is generally recommended that candidates should be aged 20 or over, but candidates aged between 18 and 20 can be accepted at the centre's discretion)
- Have an awareness of language and a competence in both written and spoken English, which will enable them to undertake the course and prepare for teaching a range of levels (C1 on the CEFR)
- Have the potential to develop the necessary skills to become effective teachers and to complete successfully the written assignments and the assessment of practical teaching

Monday to Friday, 9:00 - 17:30 (Hungary Time)

Help for Jobs

This school provides support for trainees in finding a teaching position in a number of ways:

The Assistant Head of Teacher Training (or a Senior Trainer) meets with the group during the course in order to offer concrete and industry-specific advice on how to find employment in EFL - whom to contact and how, what form a CV should take, what to ask in an interview, how to screen job offers, and tricks for ensuring that your CV is at the top of the pile.

Trainees are then sent (upon request) a booklet of post-CELTA experiences written by the school's graduates, which gives further specific advice on how to attack the job market and what difficulties to expect whilst carrying out a jobsearch.

In addition, the school is approached regularly by schools in the region (and beyond) looking for teachers - they know that the school runs CELTAs and turns out excellent teachers - such approaches are passed on to trainees through email and through the school facebook page. In fact, it is not uncommon for a trainee to finish the course and walk more or less directly into a position.

For positions further afield, the school helps trainees make good use of the school's affiliate network (more than 200 schools in 40 countries), as well as identify quality teaching institutions in whatever geographical area they're interested in. They have a well-developed network of contacts, including many former CELTA trainees (25 years' worth), who help keep the school in touch with the opportunities around the world, and inform on employers who should be avoided.

As you might hope, the school very much believes it's in their own interest that you find a teaching position that suits you, both in terms of location and in terms of the support you'll get when working there - and to that end, the school is willing to do their very best to ensure you end up getting the opportunity to put what you will have learned into practice and continue to develop as a teacher.
