Course Description
This 120 hour course offers university-standard instruction to native (or near native) speakers of English. It is approved and accredited by the centre's Board of Directors and by Chiang Mai University.
The course is split into two sections; 70 hours of classroom instruction (or input session) and 50 hours practicum. There are a maximum of 6 trainees on the course which will ensure each trainee receives individual attention.
In the input session, you will focus on learning how to teach. Everything is explained to you, from how language learning works to different teaching approaches, methods and techniques. In addition, you will learn all you need to know about phonology, linguistics and grammar to become an effective language teacher. There is also the practical aspect to the input session; you will look at presentation skills, learning styles and lesson planning.
In the practicum, you have the opportunity to put theory into action. This is a completely hands on experience and you’ll be spending time teaching both larger classes and private one on one sessions with language learners from Chiang Mai University. As a result you’ll have at least six classroom hours. This provides you with invaluable experience and allows you to develop your personal teaching style in a relaxed environment. When not conducting the practicum lesson yourself, you’ll be assisting other student teachers during their lessons and working individually with Thai students.
