Course Description
Entry requirements
This course is open to native and non-native speakers of English over 21 with a degree or equivalent qualification.
All applicants will be expected to demonstrate an acceptable level of linguistic proficiency.
Experience of teaching is not necessary, but you must be prepared to work hard on what is a demanding, but rewarding experience.
Course details
By completing this course you will learn how to teach a group of students of mixed nationalities using only English. This may sound daunting, but, following a carefully-designed syllabus, our aim is to turn you into a confident and knowledgeable teacher.
The course training sessions cover:
-teaching skills
-classroom management
-pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar – and how to teach them
-problems encountered by language learners
-evaluating coursebooks and developing your own material
-technology in the classroom
Your coursework involves the completion of the following projects:
-The Teaching Practice Journal
You will teach seven lessons totalling six hours. You must compile a journal containing lesson plans, materials, self evaluations and tutors’ feedback.
-Guided Observation Journal
You will observe four hours of lessons given by trained teachers and comment on what you have seen.
-Language Awareness Exam
A test of grammar, pronunciation and teaching skills.
-Learner Profile Assignment
A study of a learner - an appraisal of his/her abilities and details of a one-hour lesson to teach them
-Materials Assignment
Here, you analyse and assess material you have produced as part of your teaching practice. This project is marked externally.
-Unknown Language
In these sessions, you experience first-hand what it’s like to be immersed in a language lesson as a beginner student.
The course requires hard work and dedication.As well as attending the sessions, there is a fair amount of research and follow-up work in your own time. You will most likely, however, find it one of the most rewarding educational experiences of your life, and for many trainees gaining the certificate is the start of a new and exciting career.

Located in one of London's leafiest suburbs, this centre has been running since 1977 and therefore offers thirty years experience in teaching English to students from all over the world.
Facilities include two computer rooms - one with 14 computers giving free access to Internet and another with 8 (soon to be more) fast Internet connections for your laptops. There is also a library which is open from 8:30 to 17:00 every day and a coffee room and canteen for trainees to use.

Help for Jobs
On this course, we provide you with input sessions to help you get the type of teaching job you want. These include information on:
- Young learners - especially useful when you’re abroad and for summers in this country;
- English for Specific Purposes – after you’ve gained experience you might want to specialise in a particular area, such as Law, Medicine or a number of other professional fields;
- Jobsearch – we introduce you to the international TEFL market, explaining where to find work, who you’ll be teaching and at what time of year. In addition, we explain how to find work through agencies and industry publications. At certain times of the year, opportunities may also arise for newly-qualified teachers in the school itself.
