Course Description
The course follows the Trinity College London CertTESOL syllabus. Lectures, workshops and observation of experienced teachers take up approximately half the course time. The Teaching Practice, which is the most practical and important element of the course, takes up the other half and is conducted with real students of english.
The course is divided into 3 main areas:
1) Methodology Input
Will present a variety of techniques for introducing and practising new language; for encouraging accurate and fluent speech; raising students' interest and participation; setting language in realistic contexts; lesson planning, using course books and authentic material; developing listening, writing and reading skills; checking students' understanding and providing feedback; testing; using entertaining methods such as games, songs, videos, computers etc.
2) Language Awareness
It is intended to develop an ability to analyse language from the standpoint of what students need to know about it, i.e. techniques for clarifying meaning, usage and pronunciation. Topics covered include the tense system of English; phonemic chart and sounds; conditional sentences; modal verbs; expressing future meanings; stress and intonation; features of connected speech; and the correction of pronunciation errors.
3) Teaching Practice
Teaching techniques are practised by the course participants in regular teaching practice sessions. Every candidate is required to complete a minimum of 6 hours observed teaching with classes of adult learners. In addition, s/he will observe qualified teachers with live classes for a minimum of 8 hours.
Trainees work in groups of up to 5, sharing the teaching practice (TP) sessions and liasing closely so that the sessions are coherent and productive for the students. TP begins early in the course, but not on day one. All trainees teach individual 30-minute lessons of TP on day one. Thereafter sessions raise up to 45 minutes, and finally to 60 minutes.
Detailed lesson notes are given out by the tutors in the first 2 weeks of the course, but by the end of week three trainees should be preparing reasonably independently, consulting the trainers only when necessary.
After TP, TP feedback follows, either immediately or on the next day. In feedback the TP group and the tutor discuss the lessons which took place during TP. While the tutor is inevitably seen as having a "leading role" in feedback sessions, contributions are encouraged and welcomed from all trainees; these could be in the form of comments or questions (when a trainee is not teaching, s/he is observing fellow trainees teach). When discussing a particular lesson, the teacher of that lesson is expected to comment on it: developing an ability to evaluate one's own teaching is a very important component of the course. At the end of each feedback session, written feedback from the tutor is given to each candidate who taught.

Prague
Prague is for many a place of weekend escapes, magnificent medieval architecture, traditional folklore and remarkably cheap beer. With it's stunning location straddling the Vltava River and set in rolling Bohemian countryside, the city is beauty, mysticism and romance all rolled into one. As capital of the Czech Republic it is also oozing with history and brimming with future promise, as communist rule becomes slowly forgotten and young Czechs go about their increasingly bustling city life. You can still get lost in a maze of courtyards and cobbled alleys, and you can still explore an endless number of churches and cathedrals, but behind those old stone walls you'll also hear the clink of glasses, laughter over a post-work drink, and haunting melodies floating from some front-room piano. Reason enough to spend more than a weekend here, and find out what it's really all about.
