The Trinity CertTESOL and the Cambridge CELTA courses are externally validated by Teaching Awards bodies based in the UK. They are placed at Level 4 on the UK National Qualifications framework, which is one of the features which make them the TEFL courses most referred to by name. They are often the preferred qualification of language schools looking to recruit new teachers, as employers know exactly what the has been covered in the course, and therefore what they can expect from newly-qualified teachers.

During every Cambridge CELTA or Trinity Cert TESOL course, an externally appointed third party inspector, called a Moderator, or Assessor, will come in and ensure that the course is running to agreed standards.

These courses run continuously for 4 or sometimes 5 intensive weeks, and can also run in part-time formats, from 11 up to 27 weeks in duration.

These courses have a minimum of 120 hours of face to face training, with 2 to 3 hours of input sessions and 2 to 3 hours of observed and assessed teaching practice each day.

They are taught by tutors with years of experience of EFL teaching, who have top-notch TEFL qualifications themselves and who have followed a rigorous training process to become teacher trainers. All of this puts them in a completely different league to the 20-hour weekend courses, other short TEFL courses and online courses.
