You can apply for the Cambridge CELTA or Trinity CertTESOL
course in Toronto through the Cactus TEFL admissions system.
This course is most popular if you are already in Canada,
but the cost can sometimes make it prohibitively expensive
to you if you're not in Canada already.
In terms of working in Canada, it's great if you're a
local, not so good if you're trying to get in from outside.
This is due the work visa being tricky to secure. Once
you have this however, you're fine.
TEFL Job Prospects in Canada
Please note that to work in Canada, the teacher must have
status that entitles them to work here (citizenship, residency,
work visa). Employers will not sponsor foreign teachers.
Here are some of the places where the school’s
CELTA grads have found work:
Private language schools Private language schools exist
in most, if not all, countries. Overseas schools are generally
staffed with a combination of native and non-native English
speakers. Most private language schools in Canada require
their teachers to have an English language teaching qualification
and a university degree. There is an enormous demand for
qualified native English speakers both locally and abroad.
College and university English language departments Canadian
colleges and universities often have ESL programmes for
foreign students who are here specifically to learn English.
Additionally, overseas colleges and universities have
English language departments that hire native speakers
to teach English conversation.
International elementary and high schools These are often
the only educational institutions accessible to foreign
residents living abroad. The schools usually offer instruction
in English but the students may not be native English
speakers. For example, a Spanish family living in Japan
would most likely send their children to an English international
school. English language teachers are employed at the
international schools to help students develop their language
skills. Some of these schools will also require you to
have a qualification for teaching elementary or high school.
In-house company lessons in Canada and abroad Many companies
offer their employees in-house lessons in English. They
contract English language teachers to come in and conduct
these classes.
Humanitarian orgnizations Many organizations with projects
in non-English speaking countries offer English language
lessons to the local people.
